Prof to discuss American Indian stereotypes
UIndy’s monthly Faculty Forum continues Thursday with Dr. Gregory Reinhardt, professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology, discussing one of his key interests.
“Indian Stereotypes: A World of Collectibles, Kitsch, and Creepy Material Culture” is the title of Dr. Reinhardt’s presentation, scheduled 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Schwitzer Student Center 010. Light refreshments will be served, and brown bag lunches are encouraged.
Reinhardt maintains a substantial collection of items and imagery that reflect our society’s continuing fascination with American Indians, but which generally are inaccurate and sometimes bizarre and bigoted in their attempts to portray Indian life and culture. His talk will outline a book-in-progress titled Depicting Indians: Visual Fantasies about America’s Favorite Peoples.
