Reflector rounds up statewide news awards

It’s been another banner year for The Reflector.

UIndy’s student newspaper and its accompanying website, The Reflector Online, won eight state-level awards in the latest Society of Professional Journalists Best in Indiana Journalism competition. Announced May 2, the honors included second place to the staff for Best Journalism Website and three individual awards for photographer Zefeng “Ben” Zhang.

In April, Reflector staffers claimed 15 statewide awards in Division II of the Indiana Collegiate Press Association competition. Those honors included:

  • Staff – Newspaper of the Year, second place; Best Single Issue, first place; Best Overall Design, second place
  • Scott Mitchell – Best Sports Feature Story, first place: Best Sports Column, first and third place
  • Abby Gross and AJ Rose, Best News Feature Story, first place
  • Zi-Shin “Mia” Lin, Best News Photo, first place

Editor-in-chief this year was summa cum laude graduating senior English major James Figy, who also claimed a second-place ICPA award for Best In-Depth Story and a couple SPJ third-place awards for graphics and photography. The Reflector is advised by Jeanne Criswell, associate professor of Communication.
