Department of English notches big wins in 2018

The University of Indianapolis Department of English is celebrating several notable student achievements in 2018.

The Etchings Press staff were honored with first place in the 2018 American Scholastic Press Association’s review and competition for the 30.1 and 30.2 editions.

Staff included: Kylie Seitz ’19 (English), Spencer Martin ’18 (English-Literary Studies & creative writing), Jimmy Nelligan ’18 (English-Literary Studies & creative writing), Shauna Sartoris ’20 (English), Sara Perkins ’20 (English), Paige Stratton ’18 (art therapy & studio concentration in photography), Jessica Marvel ’20 (English), Duncan Weir ’20 (English), Kate Watts ’18 (English, literary studies concentration), Natalie McCann ’19 (English), Michael Miller (nursing), Tyrah Eakle ’21 (English/creative writing), Riley Childers ’21 (professional writing), Shannon Harris ’20 (English), Breannah Nunn ’22 (English/creative writing), Brooklyn Raines ’21 (English/creative writing) and Trix Rosewood ’21 (English/creative writing). Advisor: Liz Whiteacre, assistant professor of English.

Kylie Seitz, former editor-in-chief of Etchings Magazine, participated in an internship with Zionsville-based Tipton Poetry Journal during the summer of 2018 and helped publish the journal’s summer issue. The Tipton Poetry Journal now partners with ProEdge and will offer additional internships to UIndy students in the future. Seitz also designed the 2018 Whirling Prize Bookplate.

Natalie McCann ’19 (English)’s chapbook Maria, I’m Drunk, which she wrote for ENGL 471, was one of five finalists for the 2018 Digging Press Chapbook Series among 250 submissions.

Liz Whiteacre, assistant professor of English, published four persona poems in Wordgathering Magazine for the September 2018 issue.
