5 Reasons to Read Bleak House by Charles Dickens with Communiversity 2024

Communiversity 2024 Bleak House

Written by Troi Watts

Communiversity – the University of Indianapolis’ online, book-club-style course – returns this fall to explore Bleak House by Charles Dickens.

Why should you register for Communiversity this year?

1. Because you’re a fan of legal drama.

Bleak House follows the Jarndyce family, who become embroiled in a long-running lawsuit over a disputed inheritance. As the lawsuit progresses, each family member uncovers secrets that were long buried, including long-lost relatives, and becomes embroiled in nefarious plots, culminating in a murder. If you enjoy thrill rides and big reveals, Bleak House should be on your TBR list.

    2. Because you’re interested in the social impact of the legal system, especially in a historical context.

Bleak House provides a scathing critique of the 19th-century British legal system, particularly the Court of Chancery. Through its portrayal of the never-ending case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce, Dickens exposes the inefficiencies and injustices of the legal system, making readers reflect on broader social and legal issues.

      3. Because you want to join a book club, but don’t have time to meet in-person.

Between work, school, and everyday life, you may not have the time to go across town to join the local book club. Thankfully, Communiversity brings the book club to you. The course is completely virtual, with manageable weekly readings to do at-home or wherever you read best, and online discussions with fellow readers.

        4. Because you enjoy hearing new perspectives on classic novels.

In addition to weekly readings and online discussions with fellow Communiversity students, you’ll have the opportunity to attend three lectures exploring the themes of Bleak House by professors from UIndy. Each faculty member represents a different area of study, giving students the opportunity to dive deeper into the historical context and themes within Bleak House. Bonus: all three lectures have both an in-person and a virtual meeting option, allowing you to tune in from wherever is convenient for you.

          This year’s lecture series features:

          • Dr. Chad Martin, Associate Professor of History
          • Dr. Jonathan Evans, Professor of Philosophy
          • Dr. Grant Williams, Assistant Professor of Theatre

          5. Because the course is only $10* and the novel is free!

Gym and other club memberships can cost a pretty penny on a monthly basis, but with Communiversity, you can connect with like-minded readers, read a classic novel, and hear from expert faculty, for a one-time fee of $10! Plus, you can access a free copy of Bleak House courtesy of Project Gutenberg.

*UIndy students can register for Communiversity for free, as part of their semester courses. The cost of the course is included in their semester bill.
