A Busy Summer for UIndy Music Students
Even while taking a break from classes during the 2024 summer season, UIndy’s Department of Music students have remained busy. Read how they made the most of their summer months through both national recognition and serving the community.
The UIndy collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education was recognized at the 2024 National Conference in Washington, D.C. as one of three chapters in the United States for achievement in Service. Music Education students Tori Condra and Ellie Jones were two of only eight students in the country to receive the Professional Achievement award. Director of Music Education and Orchestra Dr. Laurie C. Williams along with NAfME former President and honoree Ellie Jones were able to attend in-person to receive their awards.
“Our Music Education students are thriving and we are very proud of their accomplishments,” said UIndy Department of Music Chair Rebecca Sorley.
In addition to this achievement, students also assisted with the second season of “Music for All Abilities” day camps that took place this summer. This year, campers could choose to participate in either one or two days to learn about music and make friends. Adjunct Music Education faculty Joyce Click, Director of Music Therapy Amy Foley, and Rebecca Sorley directed the camp and worked with UIndy Music Therapy and Music Education students to lead activities for students with and without intellectual and physical disabilities. Students sang, played instruments, and composed their own pieces during a full day of activities, then performed what they learned for parents and friends. Over thirty young students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade participated in the camps with a focus on travel and movies.
