UIndy Faculty, Staff Provide Expert Insight to Local & National Media in January

UIndy Faculty in the News January

As part of their commitment to “education for service,” faculty and staff at the University of Indianapolis share their expertise with local and national news outlets in order to keep our community informed and to introduce new perspectives on current issues.

UIndy faculty and staff were featured in the following news stories in January:

Dr. Krista Latham, professor of biology and anthropology, as well as the director of the Human Identification Center, was featured by the Associated Press as part of an in-depth story on the bodies found at Fox Hollow Farm. The story was syndicated more than 200 times, in both local outlets like WTHR and the Indianapolis Business Journal as well as national outlets like CBS News and the San Francisco Chronicle. She was mentioned by the Times of Northwest Indiana as prosecutors expect to refile charges in a double murder case in Jasper County.

Dr. Matt Will, associate professor of finance, penned an op-ed posing the question whether the style and policy of incoming Indiana Gov. Mike Braun would more closely resemble Gov. Mitch Daniels or Gov. Eric Holcomb which first appeared in the Indiana Capital Chronicle and was syndicated by numerous outlets statewide including the Goshen News and the Columbus Republic. He analyzed the impact of Gov. Braun’s proposal to phase out taxes on retirement income to WRTV. He was interviewed live multiple times with Tony Katz on WIBC.

Dana Hunsinger Benbow, adjunct professor of communication, was named as the Indiana sportswriter of the year by the National Sports Media Association as covered in the Indianapolis Star. She is the first woman to win the award.

Janet Boyle, director of the Rural Early College Network at the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL), was quoted as part of the coverage for CELL receiving a $10 million Education Innovation and Research (EIR) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to lead the Rural Early College Network 2.0 to support 20 rural high school districts in Indiana. The program and its impact were covered in local media including the Kokomo Tribune, the Dubois County Herald, the Dubois County Free Press and WSCH Radio in Lawrenceburg. CELL and the University of Indianapolis were also mentioned in related coverage on WKRC in Cincinnati.

Dr. Tanuja Singh discussed the importance of experiential learning and UIndy’s new programs as the feature speaker for a meeting of the Greenwood Rotary Club, as covered in the Daily Journal. Singh, Provost and Executive Vice President Dr. Chris Plouff and Dr. Pamela Wimbush were quoted in the Daily Journal in connection with Wimbush’s selection as the inaugural dean of UIndy Online and the Sease Institute.

Dr. Laura Merrifield Wilson, associate professor of political science, was one of the featured guests for several episodes for the politically-minded IN Focus show airing on WXIN as well as on other stations around the state. She was interviewed live as part of inauguration day coverage on WXIN as well doing an interview later in the month on WRTV. She provided expert analysis as Gov. Braun signed 19 executive orders, including the elimination of DEI and bringing workers back to the office for a story on WTHR which was also syndicated by WHAS in Louisville and WTOL in Toledo. She discussed the differences in the statewide Republican party that Gov. Braun would need to navigate to the Indianapolis Star. She analyzed the debate on presidential power after President Donald Trump’s first executive orders to the Indianapolis Recorder and the nature and impact of Trump’s immigration policies for Indiana on WRTV.

Dr. Eliot Motato, assistant professor of engineering, had his research on nonlinear energy sink absorbers published by the Journal of Vibration and Acoustics.

Dr. Gregory Shufeldt, associate professor of political science, discussed the impact of a bill that would make Indiana a “closed primary” state and prevent registered Democrats from voting in Republican primaries with the Indianapolis Star.

Carissa Newton, assistant professor of practice in marketing and the director of the Stephen F. Fry Scholars program, is a finalist for the Top 100 Marketing Professional Award organized by OnConferences
