What to Expect at New Hounds Day (New Student Orientation)
We are so excited to welcome the Class of 2029 to the University of Indianapolis! Our official welcome begins with New Hounds Days, our new student orientation, over the summer. During New Hounds Day, new UIndy students have the opportunity to meet fellow classmates, be introduced to their professors and support staff, schedule their first semester classes, and more.
What should new students expect during their New Hounds Day?
New students start their New Hounds Day off in Krannert Memorial Library for check-in. Here students will receive their family guide, take their student ID photo, and set up their UIndy account. Students will need access to their UIndy accounts in order to use the secure Wi-Fi, schedule their classes that afternoon, and log in to the UIndy app. During check-in, students may also see a UIndy celebrity: Grady the Greyhound, UIndy’s live mascot!

Students who have not already completed their placement assessments will have the opportunity to do so during New Hounds Day. Placement assessments are required to sign up for certain classes.
Next, the UIndy Admissions Team will welcome the Class of 2029 to campus! After the welcome ceremony, students dive right in with presentations covering important topics like financial aid and the general education core.
Following these presentations, students and their guests will have the opportunity to meet with faculty from their academic program. During this time, faculty members will discuss what to expect from their program, including what courses they will take in the fall, specific requirements to remain in the program (if applicable), and differences between high school and college courses. Some students may even be able to see the actual syllabi and assignments for their introductory classes.
Students and their guests will then take a break for a delicious lunch provided by UIndy Dining Services. Lunch will include options for those who require vegetarian, gluten-free, halal, and other special dietary options. During lunch, staff from UIndy Athletics will share how our new Hounds can get in the game this year; UIndy students get free admission to athletic events on campus!

Following lunch, students and their guests can visit the resource and involvement fair happening in Shreve Atrium (located in Schwitzer Student Center). At the fair, students can connect with academic departments, student services, including the Build Program and Study Abroad Office, and student organizations like the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Student Leadership Activities Board (SLAB).
Next, New Hounds are split into groups and guided through a campus rotation that allows them to meet with career coaches in the Stephen F. Fry Professional Edge Center, visit the Office of Student Affairs, and even play some icebreaker games to get to know other future Greyhounds. Students will also learn about the free services offered by the UIndy Student Counseling Center, the UIndy Health and Wellness Center, and more.
While students are getting to campus, guests will hear from UIndy faculty, staff, and alumni to learn more about the challenges of transitioning to college and how UIndy supports its students throughout this transition.
New Hounds Day will conclude with a wrap-up from the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Residence Life. This will also be an opportunity for students who will be living on campus to tour UIndy’s residence halls. Students can choose to tour one, two, or all six residence halls. However, students will not receive their hall assignments or roommate assignments until July. (These will be sent through the mail.)
After all this excitement, New Hounds Day comes to an end. We can’t wait to see the Class of 2029 back on campus this fall!
