UIndy Faculty, Staff Provide Expert Insight to Local & National Media in May

UIndy Faculty in the News May

As part of their commitment to “education for service,” faculty and staff at the University of Indianapolis share their expertise with local and national news outlets in order to keep our community informed and to introduce new perspectives on current issues.

UIndy faculty and staff were featured in the following news stories in May:

Dr. Brett Leonard, associate professor and director of music technology programs, invited everyone to hop on board the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus when it made a stop on the UIndy campus as part of a live interview on WISH-TV.

Vince Bertram, assistant professor of business, provided a definition of a startup business for the 2025 Innovation Issue in the Indianapolis Business Journal.

Dr. Lacey Davidson, assistant professor of philosophy, and Dr. Gregory Shufeldt, associate professor of political science, penned an op-ed together for the Indiana Capital Chronicle about the applied political philosophy course that taught together and how the legislative session shuts out most Hoosiers. The commentary was also republished in local outlets like the Dubois County Herald. In addition, Shufeldt provided expert analysis for the Indianapolis Star in a story examining how state lawmakers tried to rein in fellow state officials on non-bid contracts.

Janet Boyle, director of the Rural Early College Network (RECN) for the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL), was quoted a number of times as new high schools around the state joined RECN including WTWO, the Paper of Montgomery County, the Greensburg Daily News, the Terre Haute Tribune Star and the Marion Chronicle-Tribune. CELL also received prominent coverage in connection with Early College High School endorsement or the Indiana Pathways to Careers and Postsecondary (P-CAP) cohort announcement in places like Chalkbeat, as well as WTHI and the Crawfordsville Journal Review.

Dr. Mark O’Connor, associate professor and director of jazz studies, was commended for his standout performance during a Monday NIght Jazz Jam session at The Jazz Kitchen by the V13 Media Group.

Dr. Laura Merrifield Wilson, associate professor of political science, and Abdul-Hakim Shabazz, adjunct faculty member, were two of the featured guests for the politically-minded IN Focus show airing on WXIN as well as on other stations around the state. Wilson also made several solo appearances on IN Focus at other times during the month as well. She discussed why Gov. Mike Braun waited until the legislative deadline to sign dozens of bills from the session with The Statehouse File. She analyzed the chippy town hall featuring Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith with WPTA.

Al Ready, head baseball coach, along with several Greyhound baseball players discussed the ongoing cancer fight of Greyhound pitcher Dawson Gabe for a story on WRTV.

Dr. Milind Thakar, professor of international relations and director of the international relations graduate program, penned an op-ed about India’s options following the Pahalgam massacre for American Kahani.

Shawn McGowan, adjunct music faculty member, was highlighted for his participation in the Music of Series by Do317.

Dr. Matt Will, associate professor of finance,  discussed financial topics like how the jobs market is faring, the effect of a proposed cap on prescription drug prices or the impact of Moody downgrading the U.S. credit rating for multiple live interview segments with Tony Katz on WIBC.

Emily Tisdale, executive director of the Center for Aging & Community, penned an op-ed about why fall prevention must be a public health priority which appeared in multiple outlets like the Hamilton County Reporter, the Jeffersonville News and Tribune or the New Castle Courier-Times.
