The University of Indianapolis is excited to renew a Welcome Week tradition with the second annual Service for Impact Day to give back to the community on Saturday, Aug. 23. More than 200 Greyhound students, faculty and staff are expected to participate, helping many non-profit organizations like Horizon House, Damien Center, Boys & Girls Club and Pink Ribbon Connection from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The service work will be followed by a celebratory gathering on campus.

This event is an annual tradition designed to inspire students to give themselves through service in rewarding ways. It adds another layer of meaning to the UIndy motto which states simply “Education for Service,” particularly to the hundreds of newly-arrived freshmen students who arrived on campus earlier in the week.

“One of the hallmarks of Gen Z is a sense of purpose and a motivation to contribute to a cause that is bigger than themselves—and that is what Service for Impact Day is all about,” said Marianna Foulkrod, the director of the Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement at the University of Indianapolis. “Whether assembling snack kits or creating mats for the homeless in Central Indiana or writing meaningful messages filled with words of affirmation to those struggling with a mental health crisis, we want our first-year Greyhound students to understand the importance of service learning to their collegiate experience.”

Service for Impact Day will begin with a short opening presentation in Schwitzer Student Center on the University of Indianapolis campus with brief remarks from UIndy Vice President and Chief of Staff Andy Kocher and other distinguished guests. Immediately following participants will head to various gathering spaces around campus to work on service projects as a group. Everyone will get back together around 1 p.m. in UIndy Hall inside the Schwitzer Student Center for a celebratory gathering involving food and fun activities.

“Service for Impact Day reflects UIndy’s deep commitment to our community,” said Kocher, who is also Vice President of Corporate and Community Partnerships. “Our students join our faculty, staff, and neighbors in meaningful service, reminding us that education is not only about personal success but also about service and collective responsibility. Together, we are strengthening the bonds that make our city thrive.”
