UIndy Researchers Recognized by Indiana Academy of Science
Rochelle Maxson ’26 and Dr. Marc Milne, professor of biology, were awarded for their work at the annual meeting of the Indiana Academy of Science (IAS).
The IAS seeks to bring together Indiana scientists, researchers, and educators across all disciplines to share discoveries and advance science. The Academy’s 2026 meeting had a record number of attendees, and scientists at undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels presented and discussed their research.
Maxson placed second in the Emerging Scientist Poster Competition at the Baccalaureate level for her poster titled, “Putting the Puzzle Together: Hyperadhesive Desmosome Protein Complexes in Early Vertebrate Embryonic Ectoderm.” Her poster presentation focuses on developmental cellular biology and attempts to find a specialized protein complex in early vertebrate embryonic tissues.
Maxson is grateful to share her research with the Academy, and this recognition reminds her to keep challenging herself through her research in biology.
“This award is both an honor and a reminder of why I’m passionate about this work,” said Maxson. “It pushes me to keep growing and taking on new challenges.”
Dr. Milne received the Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes individuals who are committed to the service of advancing science and education.

Dr. Milne feels honored to be recognized for his service and believes that highlighting Indiana’s contributions to science is very important in today’s world.
“My service through IAS has always had the promotion of science at its heart,” said Dr. Milne. “At a time when science is falsely being framed as untrustworthy, I feel that this service is essential to raise awareness of the important science that is being done in Indiana, especially that which is used to protect our quickly vanishing biodiversity.”
