The University of Indianapolis Hosts the 30th Annual Summer Piano Camp
Written by Troi Watts
The University of Indianapolis hosted more than 20 young pianists of all talents in June for the 30th Annual Summer Piano Camp. Led by UIndy students, alumni, and faculty, the Summer Piano Camp immersed its young musicians in various aspects of music, including solo and ensemble performance, history, composition, and theory.
Founded in 1994 by Dr. Rebecca Sorley, Camp Director and Chair of the Department of Music, the first UIndy Summer Piano Camp began by hosting four young pianists. Over the years, the camp has grown to be a beloved summer tradition for the community, shaping the musical journey of more than 400 young people and offering invaluable, hands-on experience to more than 50 UIndy students and alumni.
The legacy of the UIndy Summer Piano Camp is also growing. Inspired by his education experience with the Department of Music, UIndy alum Lai Lian ‘23 created the Melody Music Academy last year to serve the Burmese population in Indianapolis. Nine Melody Music Academy students attended this year’s Summer Piano Camp.
“The camp brings people together who love piano music,” said Dr. Sorley. “Many young pianists return year after year to have fun playing music with their friends. I love the community the camp creates for the students, parents, and instructors and look forward to this week every year!”
