University of Indianapolis proudly celebrates diversity with 36th annual Celebration of Flags and World Fest

The rich diversity of the University of Indianapolis, as well as one of its greatest traditions, will be showcased with the 36th annual Celebration of Flags on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m., immediately followed by World Fest, a festival of culture featuring performances from almost two dozen cultural groups. The events are the centerpieces of the International Education Celebrations, a series of events from Oct. 16-18.

Celebration of Flags is modeled after the Olympics Opening Ceremony, with individual recognition during the ‘Call of Nations’ of the national origin of all students, faculty and staff—everything from Algeria to Zimbabwe. Most flags are carried by someone from that country, and some flag bearers will dress in traditional clothing from their country as well.

It all begins at 2 p.m. on Oct. 17 on Smith Mall (see attached photo as well as at https://t.ly/UC4hW). About 500 people are expected to attend, with the public welcome to join the UIndy community. Parking is free on campus.

“I am very proud to be the first UIndy President to be born in another country,” said Dr. Tanuja Singh. “I know what it’s like to travel to a different country to attain an education. Diversity is what makes us great and that’s why I love that UIndy celebrates its diversity in comprehensive and meaningful ways. In a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected, it is imperative that we do so.”

World Fest is a celebration of diverse cultures with almost two dozen cultural groups being represented from 3-5 p.m. on Oct. 17, all on a stage not far from a massive globe that spans 12 feet in diameter. There will be many hands-on activities, traveling exhibits and free food. Groups performing represent Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Arab peninsula including performances by Indy Bollywood, Haitian folk music singer Chris Bazz La and Venezuelan folk singer Florelis, just to name a few.

Schedule of events for International Education Celebrations:

Wednesday, Oct. 16:

• Passport Power Hour – 11 a.m. – Aimed at helping American students get their passport, particularly first-generation students who may be the first in their family to get one
• Afghan Refugee Personal Story – 1 p.m. – A refugee from Afghanistan will share their personal story
• Brief Tender Light (movie) – 7 p.m. – A movie about the difficulties international students have trying to come to the United States for college as well as adapting to American culture once they arrive

Thursday, Oct. 17:

• Celebration of Flags – 2 p.m. – Smith Mall featuring Call of Nations and remarks from several speakers
• World Fest – 3 p.m. – Lots of learning and fun at Schwitzer Student Center

Friday, Oct. 18:

• Beverages without Borders – 10 a.m. – Featuring drinks (and culture) from around the globe
• Passport Power Hour – 11 a.m. – Aimed at helping American students get their passport, particularly first-generation students who may be the first in their family to get one
• Chinese Dragon Dance Workshop – 2 p.m. – Learn about the history and culture of the dragon dance and how to perform it
• Global Gallery Reception – 4 p.m. – Featuring the rotating work of UIndy students with items for sale that will benefit international and internationally-traveling students in a variety of ways
• Celebrando La Cultura – 6 p.m. – A vibrant fiesta celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
