University of Indianapolis students in the Build Program — which supports learners with disabilities — are stepping out of their comfort zones in a new acting class. As shown on WTHR, Assistant Professor of Theater Grant Williams says the course helps students develop creativity, interpersonal skills and confidence while practicing improv and character work, giving them opportunities to express themselves in ways they might not elsewhere. Betsy McGill, director of disability resources and Build at UIndy, notes that the class also encourages mental flexibility, helping students improve social norms, tonality and communication. Students report gaining practical social skills, teamwork experience, and increased self-expression through participation. The program highlights how University of Indianapolis expertise in inclusive, experiential education supports broader efforts to expand life skills, confidence and social development for learners with diverse needs.
