Special Olympics Basketball Tournament set to inspire athletes and communities alike on the UIndy campus

Athletes compete as part of the Special Olympics basketball tournament hosted on the University of Indianapolis campus from 2024.

Special Olympics Indiana and Sport Management students at the University of Indianapolis are excited to announce the upcoming Special Olympics State Youth Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 28 at Nicoson Hall and Ruth Lilly Fitness Center at the University of Indianapolis. The tournament is truly a one-of-a-kind event—it is the only youth basketball tournament for Special Olympics athletes in the world. This year the event marks its 16th anniversary of making a difference through competition, camaraderie and celebration.

The tournament planned and implemented collaboratively between 24 UIndy Sport Management students and Special Olympics Indiana, features nearly 100 individuals from around the state, dedicated athletes with intellectual disabilities who have been training tirelessly for this moment. Their determination, passion, and sportsmanship exemplify the true spirit of the Special Olympics movement.

In addition to the thrilling basketball action, the tournament will include various activities and entertainment for spectators of all ages. Attendees can expect a day filled with excitement and heartfelt moments as they cheer on the athletes and witness their remarkable achievements.

The Special Olympics Basketball Tournament serves as a reminder of the power of sports to break down barriers, create opportunities, and unite communities. It is a testament to the unwavering determination and resilience of individuals with intellectual disabilities, who continue to defy stereotypes and redefine perceptions through their participation in athletics.
