UIndy Faculty, Staff Provide Expert Insight to Local & National Media in July:

As part of their commitment to “education for service,” faculty and staff at the University of Indianapolis share their expertise with local and national news outlets in order to keep our community informed and to introduce new perspectives on current issues.

UIndy faculty and staff were featured in the following news stories in July:

Liz Whiteacre, associate professor and English department chair, was interviewed in the Star Press and the Connersville News Examiner after she encouraged Indiana poet Michael Brocklet to get his first poem collection “Iron Pennies” published. 

Jacob Smith, adjunct professor of jazz studies, was featured in a live interview on WISH-TV’s Lifestyle Live program where he shared his passion for jazz and playing bass, as well as his commitment to inspiring and mentoring the next generation of musicians.

Emily Tisdale, executive director of the Center for Aging & Community and adjunct faculty, penned an Op-Ed in the Indiana Business Journal about how upcoming Medicaid work requirements could harm unpaid caregivers and create broader problems for the healthcare system. 

Dr. Tanuja Singh was listed on IBJ Media’s Indiana 250, a list of the state’s most influential and impactful leaders. Her remarks from a press conference highlighting UIndy partnering with Perry Township Schools to build a $30 million innovation and entrepreneurship program were featured in WTHR, the Indiana Business Journal, as well as Inside Indiana Business and the Daily Journal. 

Dr. Vincent O. van Empeh, assistant professor of practice and director of accreditation, explained the difference between a rewards card that offers cash back and one that offers points redeemable for cash back in WalletHub. 

Dr. Chris Plouff, provost and executive vice president, shared in the Daily Journal how UIndy’s Campus Master Plan reimagines campus spaces to meet students’ evolving needs.

Dr. Larry Belcher, professor of finance, offered his expertise to WalletHub, outlining the benefits and drawbacks of budgeting and providing practical tips for creating and sticking to a budget.

Dr. Laura Merrifield Wilson, associate professor of political science, shared her expertise with WXIN and its sister stations, WTWO and WANE, explaining why former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard’s independent candidacy for Indiana Secretary of State is unprecedented. She also provided insight to the Indianapolis Star and Mirror Indy, detailing the ethical and political implications surrounding Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett’s use of mayoral perks. She also provided analysis to The Statehouse File and the Indiana Citizen on Rodric Bray’s departure from the Senate, explaining how the redistricting debate reshaped perceptions of his leadership. 

Dr. Matt Will, associate professor of finance, discussed various financial topics during several live interviews with Tony Katz on WIBC, including the oil market and data center debate.

Carissa Newton, director of the Stephen F. Fry Scholars Program and assistant professor of practice in marketing, argued that Vera Bradley, which recently closed 13 stores, will have to go back to the basics to survive for TheStreet.
