University of Indianapolis to Host Guitar Foundation of America’s 2022 International Convention and Competition

INDIANAPOLIS— The University of Indianapolis will host the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) International Convention and Competition in 2022. The convention, scheduled for June 29 through July 2, will bring together hundreds of classical guitar masters and enthusiasts from around the world, including the most elite performers of the genre.

The annual GFA convention, which is the single largest classical guitar event in the world, will include three concerts per day, hands-on workshops, masterclasses and private lessons, a vendor exhibition and more. The convention will also feature three divisions of classical guitar competitions, with winners receiving cash prizes and recording contract opportunities.

Event organizer Dr. Nemanja Ostojić , associate adjunct professor of classical guitar and internationally-renowned classical guitarist, said the convention will make a positive impact throughout the Midwest.

“Leading guitar magazines and international publications will cover the event, simultaneously placing the UIndy campus and our capital city on the world map of guitar,” said Ostojić. “The convention also serves as a great opportunity for our students, faculty and local community to come together to celebrate art and enjoy different cultures. I’m grateful to GFA for choosing UIndy as their host once again.”

The GFA convention is a broader part of academic initiatives at UIndy to connect students with expert musicians. Ostojić has organized trips for students to participate in the annual Guitar Art Festival in Belgrade, Serbia . He also has coordinated the University’s Classical Guitar Series, featuring musicians such as Martha Masters and Andrew Zohn, who gave performances and master classes on campus.

“We are pleased to welcome world-renowned guitarists back to campus and to continue our rich tradition of connecting art with community,” UIndy Interim President Phil Terry said. “The GFA convention offers life-changing learning experiences not only for our students, but for community members as well. We’re proud to serve as a cultural anchor of the southside and look forward to providing even more of these experiences in the future.”
