UIndy students Evan Porterfield, Kennedy Phelps, Charles Foster, Jace Hodge, and Samuel Gailey, recently placed in the 2024 International Student Broadcasting Championship. They received runner-up in the People’s Choice Content Creator and Best Content Creator categories for their work on Grand Slam, the sports sector of UIndy TV and WICR 88.7. The International Student Broadcasting Championship is a global team of professionals that aims to discover talent and connect students in media with employment opportunities worldwide.
UIndy TV and WICR 88.7 fall under the UIndy Studios umbrella, modeling current corporate practices, and work together to create content for three channels. UIndy TV is a public access cable television station that broadcasts all over the Indianapolis area. Students on the media track through the Department of Communication at UIndy have the opportunity to work with the station in on-air talent, videography and behind-the-scenes roles. The track offers additional experiential opportunities in radio through WICR 88.7, UIndy’s non-commercial public radio station.
Charles Foster serves as Sports Producer for UIndy TV, Jace Hodge serves as Sports Director for WICR 88.7, Kennedy Phelps serves as Marketing & Promotions Director for UIndy Studios, Evan Porterfield serves as Postproduction Producer for UIndy TV, Sam Gailey is a senior member of UIndy TV, and Andile Bekker serves as Entertainment Media Producer for UIndy TV.
“I am immensely proud of these students. Placing second in the world is no easy feat,” praised Rick Dunkle, General Manager for UIndy TV & WICR 88.7. “The creativity and drive they have shown in producing original content for our channels is inspiring and sends an important message that if you feel like you need more opportunities to show what you are capable of, sometimes you just need to create those opportunities for yourself.”
