Communiversity celebrates 10 years with Virginia Woolf classic; invites all to enjoy book-club-style course

The University of Indianapolis is offering a low-cost, book-club-style Communiversity course to students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members. This year’s course will focus on the themes of the modernist classic novel “To the Lighthouse” by Virginia Woolf, originally published in 1927. In addition, this year Communiversity celebrates 10 years of sparking dialogue and bringing the community together through the shared experience of great literature.

The 10th annual Communiversity takes place throughout the fall semester (Aug. 25 through Dec. 11) and will include manageable weekly readings and online discussions, plus occasional lectures presented by UIndy faculty to discuss “To the Lighthouse” and more thoroughly explore the many themes within the text.

Community members wishing to participate can register here. This course is intended to be taken by those who have completed high school or have an equivalent credential. The registration cost of $10 allows access to the online discussion forum and other course materials.

“I hope that all Communiversity students will find something resonant in the novel,” said Dr. Jennifer Camden, professor and associate chair of the UIndy Department of English. “‘To the Lighthouse’ explores the tension between the older, Victorian generation and the next generation, tied together by family and summer vacation. Because the book is just 150 pages, it provides an accessible introduction to philosophy and aesthetic theory. For those intimidated by Modernist literature, ‘To the Lighthouse’ is a good entry point, and Communiversity’s online discussions will provide helpful support and context too.”

Communiversity 2025 begins Monday, Aug. 25. Registration will remain open through Sunday, Aug. 24.
