Founded in 2019, the Hickey-Shanafelt 9ollective is a contemporary jazz nonet dedicated to the performance and development of the modern jazz repertoire. Based in Indianapolis, the group is composed of established, local professionals and young, up-and-coming musicians who share a passion for bringing this music to our community. The ensemble is also an outlet for emerging and professional composers, arrangers, and performers, programming both original music and fresh arrangements of familiar standards.
The 9ollective has enjoyed performances at Merrimans’ Playhouse, the Indiana State Fair, and the world-famous Jazz Kitchen, including collaborative shows with Beech Grove visual artist Kelsey Behl. They have also performed in Chicago, IL at the Fulton Street Collective gallery, and in Akron, OH at BLU Jazz+. Recently, the group recorded and released their debut album “illuminate” in October, 2022, depicting the eclectic styles and writing of the Indianapolis jazz scene.
The jazz scene at UIndy features prominent local, regional and national jazz artists. UIndy’s jazz offerings include the Jazz Concert Series and Jazz Week, along with a number of student concerts throughout the year. UIndy also is home to Indianapolis’ only radio station with daily jazz programming, WICR 88.7 FM, which holds an annual jazz festival.
