Terrence Harewood comments in Indy Star article

Terrence Harewood

Terrence Harewood, associate professor of teacher education, commented for the Indy Star about how parents should respond to a viral video posted by a Fishers student.

Excerpt:

At home and in the classroom, it’s the talks with children that do or don’t happen which could curb or inflame another display of racism.

“The reality is that most parents don’t have these conversations with kids,” said Terrence Harewood, an associate professor of multicultural education at the University of Indianapolis. “We’re uncomfortable talking about differences and so therefore we prepare kids very well to survive in the world with an assumption of similarity.

“Differences is a reality, and because most people have not prepared to deal with differences, it can rear its ugly head.”
