UIndy Faculty, Staff Provide Expert Insight to Local & National Media in August

UIndy Faculty in the News August

As part of their commitment to “education for service,” faculty and staff at the University of Indianapolis share their expertise with local and national news outlets in order to keep our community informed and to introduce new perspectives on current issues.

UIndy faculty and staff were featured in the following news stories in August:

Rebecca McKanna, associate professor of English, won the 2024 Indiana Author Award in the “Genre” category for her book Don’t Forget the Girl, an achievement picked up by several outlets including the Indianapolis Star as well as the Indiana Business Journal. She was interviewed by Mirror Indy who talked to a few of the authors on the shortlist before the winners were announced.

Dr. Tanuja Singh discussed her vision for UIndy, as well as its new programs and stackable MBA, and the development of UIndy Online in a live interview with WISH-TV. She discussed the search for the founding dean of UIndy Online and its strategic importance to Inside Higher Ed.

Dr. Kimberly Baker, associate professor of biology, Dr. Katherine Stickney, professor of chemistry, Deborah Sachs, assistant professor of education, published an article on the positive impacts of a year-long clinical residency collaboration in the peer-reviewed journal Education Sciences, and will appear in the Teachers and Teaching in Teaching Education special issue.

Dr. Karl Knapp, dean of the School of Business, provided tips to both workers who would want a raise as well as their managers in the Indianapolis Business Journal. He discussed with Business Insider the implications of a high school which is replacing teachers with ChatGPT and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Jennifer Camden, professor and associate chair of English, was quoted in the Daily Journal as part of the newspaper’s coverage of this year’s Communiversity course which focuses on Bleak House.

Dr. Jyotika Saksena, professor of international relations, was mentioned in Ink Free News for her upcoming presentation on Congolese refugee women in Indiana on the Manchester University campus.

Dr. Marc Milne, professor of biology, sat down for an extended interview on North American spider biodiversity and the importance of spiders in the ecosystem for an episode of The Roundtable Perspective, a show airing on Lakeshore Public Media/WYIN.

School of Education Dean John Kuykendall was quoted in the Daily Journal after UIndy unveiled a new neuroscience concentration.

Carey Dahncke, executive director of the Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL), was interviewed by the Logansport Pharos-Tribune after a successful program at Logansport High School expanded to 12 more schools as a result of a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Gregory Shufeldt, associate professor of political science, shared his expertise as the delegates of Johnson County united behind Vice President Kamala Harris and her presidential bid leading up to the Democratic National Convention to the Daily Journal.

Dr. Laura Merrifield Wilson, associate professor of political science, reacted to the news of a televised debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris as well as provided analysis at the halfway point of the Democratic National Convention to WPTA. She was a featured panelist for the IN Focus show for the week following the DNC which aired on WXIN as well as other stations around the state. She weighed in on the effect of having school board candidates be one of the few nonpartisan elected positions in Indiana to Current Publishing. She was mentioned by Mirror Indy for her role as moderator of a series of housing forums hosted by Castleton United Methodist Church. 

Dr. Matt Will, associate professor of finance, was interviewed live multiple times with Tony Katz on WIBC.

Dr. Krista Latham, professor of biology and anthropology, as well as the director of the Human Identification Center, was mentioned by Current Publishing leading up to the unveiling of a memorial to the Fox Hollow Farm victims.
