UIndy Faculty in the News January

As part of their commitment to “education for service,” faculty and staff at the University of Indianapolis share their expertise with local and national news outlets in order to keep our community informed and to introduce new perspectives on current issues.

UIndy faculty and staff were featured in the following news stories in January:

Dr. Ted Frantz, chair of the history department and director of the Institute of Civic Leadership, gave historical context to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, saying it echoes the era of American imperialism. The interview appeared in an Associated Press article that was published by more than 200 media outlets.

Gina Woodward, executive director of the Metropolitan Indianapolis-Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (MICI-AHEC), appeared in live interviews with both WISH-TV and WXIN to promote UIndy’s summer camp for teenagers focusing on health careers.

Dr. Marwa Nourweldin, associate professor and director of the aging studies and healthcare administration programs, demonstrated how longer life expectancies are affecting the workplace in a blog post for the Older, Bolder & Better! substack.

Chris Keevers, head football coach, provided insight into how Peyton Manning’s influence increased the popularity of football in Indiana and thereby had a role in Indiana’s College Football Playoff championship in The Athletic. Keevers also correctly predicted the Hoosiers would defeat Miami in the national championship game in an Indianapolis Star article that polled current and former coaches across the state.

Chris Plouff, provost and executive vice president, explained how UIndy is matching tuition rates for students at Martin University after Martin announced it was closing. Plouff’s remarks were featured on WISH-TV, WTHR and HBCU News.

Tamara Wolske, assistant professor and adjunct faculty in aging studies, explained why Social Security should not be relied on as a sole source of income later in life and the impact declining birth rates in the U.S. is having on Social Security in a pair of articles for FinanceBuzz.

Carissa Newton, director of the Stephen F. Fry Scholars Program and assistant professor of practice in marketing, provided her expert opinion to WalletHub on how Americans can benefit from budgeting apps.

Dr. Laura Merrifield Wilson, associate professor of political science, highlighted the unprecedented number of state Democrats filing ahead of the May primary elections on WXIN as well as WTWO. She also explained the importance of lawmakers holding a short session before campaigning for re-election to The Statehouse File and The Indiana Citizen. Wilson told Mirror Indy that Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett’s selection of IMPD Chief Chris Bailey as chief of staff and deputy mayor reinforces the administration’s focus on reducing crime. She was also a featured guest on the Indiana Lawmakers and Indiana Week in Review programs on WFYI.

Dr. Gregory Shufeldt, associate professor of political science, explained why it is so unusual that three state senators from the Indianapolis area are not seeking re-election as well as what Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett could do with his campaign funds to the Indianapolis Star. He also shared his expertise about a bill proposal that would give the Indiana governor final say over the selection of the lieutenant governor for a story with CNHI News which was published around the state including in the Goshen News as well as the Anderson Herald Bulletin.

Dr. Matt Will, associate professor of finance, discussed various financial topics during several live interviews with Tony Katz on WIBC including the latest jobs report.
