Ken Falk Wins Third Annual Kevin R. Armstrong Ethical Leadership Award
The University of Indianapolis honored Ken Falk, interim executive director and legal director of the ACLU of Indiana, with the 2026 Kevin R. Armstrong Ethical Leadership Award on Tuesday for his leadership in protecting civil liberties.
For nearly 50 years, Falk has worked to expand access to justice and protect constitutional rights across Indiana.
“I have had the privilege since 1977 to be able to use whatever skills I have as a lawyer to help those in need and those whose basic rights are being threatened,” said Falk. “I accept this award for all the many other Hoosiers who use their skills and abilities to attempt to make this state, country and world a better place. This is certainly a time for all of us to work towards that goal.”
The Kevin R. Armstrong Ethical Leadership Award recognizes individuals whose work reflects a deep commitment to ethical leadership. The award is named for Kevin R. Armstrong, a longtime trustee at the University of Indianapolis.
“Ken has worked diligently to support everyday Hoosiers,” said Armstrong. “From his work at Indiana Legal Services to his visionary leadership as legal director of the ACLU of Indiana, Ken has demonstrated his commitment to principled ethical practice through the steadfast defense of civil liberties. We are delighted to honor him with the 2026 Armstrong Ethical Leadership Award.”

During a public dialogue, Falk expanded on these ideas, explaining that civil liberties, rooted in the United States Bill of Rights, are essential protections for individuals.
He also discussed the ethical responsibilities of lawyers, emphasizing that attorneys must advocate fully for their clients regardless of personal beliefs.
“The American judicial system is a marvelous system, but it only works if everyone is fulfilling their role,” said Falk. “It would be grossly unethical for a lawyer to ever pull their punches because they don’t like their client or don’t believe their case. Once you are involved in a case, you are there to represent your client and your client’s interests.”
Falk also highlighted challenges basic rights face in today’s society, specifically when it comes to differing viewpoints. He argued that protecting these rights requires open discussion and respect for opposing perspectives.
Falk is the third recipient of the award, following former WNBA star Tamika Catchings in 2024 and Mirror Indy editor-in-chief Oseye Boyd in 2025, placing him in a growing group of leaders recognized for their impact on the Indiana community.
